Breakout Session: Put on Your Social Earmuffs: How to Quiet the “Shoulds” and Start Hearing Yourself
- Registration Closed
As a professional organizer, Jefferson has worked with hundreds of people, helping them declutter their stuff. But it’s never about the stuff. It’s about relationships, loss, grief, parenting, careers, body image, and so much more. Buried in their homes are piles of “shoulds”—noisy societal norms that have been ingrained in them and that have been dictating their decisions for way too long. She has seen, first-hand, what can happen when people quit the “shoulds” and start to hear their own inner voices.
In this talk, you will be challenged to consider the ways in which you might be listening to the “shoulds.” What is your inner voice trying to say to you? Maybe it’s telling you to speak up more at work. Or to leave work entirely to start your own business (like Jefferson did). Or to give up alcohol. Whatever it is, there is likely something inside of you, a deeper calling that is being ignored because it’s not what you “should” do.
After this session, participants will have the tools to:
- Laugh in the face of outdated rules and expectations
- Know the difference between should and want
- Say a big fat NO to what isn’t serving them
- Give themselves permission to take action now, not when they’re “ready”

Jefferson is the owner of Indigo Organizing, the creator of the Organized Every Day online course, and one of the world’s first KonMari consultants. A TEDx speaker and the co-host of the “Good Enough-Ish” podcast, she has been featured in Real Simple, Harpers Bazaar UK, and Better Homes & Gardens magazines, among others. Jefferson left an inspiring yet stressful 20-year career to start her own business helping busy people get organized at home and work. As she was encouraging these folks to declutter their stuff, she discovered it was never really about the stuff. It was about relationships, grief, parenting, careers, body image, and so much more. She often found her clients battling the “shoulds”—trying to be the perfect parent, spouse, or loved one, with the perfect house and the perfect career—and feeling exhausted by it all. Often, her clients simply needed permission to finally let go of what wasn’t serving them. Jefferson now spends most of her time talking to audiences about how to quiet the noisy shoulds of society and instead start listening to their own inner voice so that they can live less stressful, and more joyful, lives.
